NPB: The Babe Ruth Hot Dog Returns!

Posted 03-21-2008 at 11:28 AM by Gwynar
Ok, so this is slightly old news, but it still makes for interesting fodder.

The folks running the concessions at Koshien Stadium (home of the Hanshin Tigers) have decided to bring back an old friend to the ballpark menus.

It was 74 years ago when hot dogs first went on sale in Japan. That it also happened to coincide with the arrival of the US All Star Baseball team, which included players like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Jimmie Foxx, was probably not a mistake.

Ironically, it wasn't an American that brought the hot dog over to Japan, but rather German food expert Herman Warshukke (sp?) -- he was originally taken as a prisoner by the Japanese Imperial Army.

The hot dogs didn't go over so well back in 1934. Apparently most people threw away the hot dog and ate the bun.

Now, 74 years later, Herman's son is re-introducing the hot dog that his father once tried to sell the Japanese public. The hot dogs will only be available at Koshien Stadium and will cost 500 yen (or roughly $5).
