NPB News and Notes from 11/23: New uniforms for Hiroshima unveiled

Posted 11-22-2008 at 09:09 PM by Gwynar
Daily Sports: The Hiroshima Carp unveiled new uniforms for the 2009 season. For the first time in 21 years, both home and visitor uniforms will feature red and dark blue coloring. And for the first time in ballclub history, the away uniforms will feature a red top and white pants.

Sanspo: It appears that the Yokohama Bay Stars will be signing Les Walrond. The Bay Stars hope that he can provide some stability in the rotation.

Sanspo: Katsuya Nomura wants to win it all next season. Speaking at Fan Appreciation Day yesterday, Nomura told the crowd that he will do his best to bring a Championship to Sendai during his last season at the helm. "I'm not sure if I'll be able to meet everyone's expectations, but I'll try. Next season will be a big one for me, since it'll be my last. I'll squeeze every last bit of effort out my body and hopefully, we'll be able to taste victory in the end."

Sponichi: Hiromitsu Ochiai and the Dragons that declined invitations to play at the WBC are beginning to feel the heat. Ochiai has gone on record to say that no one has told his players to either decline or accept the invitations and that the players are making their own choices. The media approached Masahiko Morino, Akifumi Takahashi, and Takuya Asao yesterday when the three showed up for rehab and practice at Nagoya Stadium. Morino was quoted as saying, "It's an honor to be picked. And I have a great deal of respect for Hara and would really love to play, but... Right now, I'm worried about my health. For the Olympics, I thought I could push myself a little. But the timing for the WBC just isn't very good so I felt I should decline." The other two players said they declined because they felt they either weren't worthy (2008 was Asao second season) or wouldn't have enough time to prepare (Takahashi).

Sponichi: Nippon Ham Fighters owner Yoshinori Ohkoso wants his players to participate in the WBC. "If you don't want to do it for Japan, do it for yourselves -- sell your names. And if by doing so, an MLB teams suddenly decides they want you, I have no problem with that."

I like the Carp uniforms a lot. The home one is simple and to the point, yet it also looks good. The font on the red top reminds me a of a font named Pilsner. The only thing I wonder is how it will look in action as it's somewhat small due to the name length.

Also, here are Les Walrond's minor league stats.

I really like the away uni's a lot. And I think you bring up an interesting point about the home uni's and the font being a bit small -- seems they could have put the lettering on less of an angle so that it would take up more side-to-side space.
