Central League

The Yomiuri Giants beat the Hanshin Tigers, 3-1.

Seung-Yeop Lee came up with a big 2-run double in the 3rd. Alex Ramirez added a third run for insurance in the bottom of the 7th, just when it felt as if the tide was beginning to turn for the Tigers. This was a big win for the Giants -- the two teams now have 3 games remaining and the magic number for the Giants is 2.

Despite having some control issues (6 walks), Testuya Utsumi still managed to hold the Tigers to 1 run over his 5.2 innings of work. The Giants' bullpen also did a great job, shutting the door and holding the Tigers to 2 hits over the remaining 3.1 innings of the game.

The Tigers bullpen has been fairly overworked lately and the rain-out was actually celebrated by the manager. Scott Atchison and Kyuji Fujikawa have pitched in 4 of the 5 games the team has played in this month. And at one point, Atchison had appeared in 10 straight and Fujikawa 9. In order to give the bullpen more time to rest, Yuya Ando wanted to pitch more, but after 4 innings and 84 pitches, he was pulled and the Tigers trotted out Jeff Williams for 1 inning, Scott Atchison for 2 innings, and Kyuji Fujikawa for the last inning. The bullpen wasn't spotless, but it did well considering the circumstances (1 ER over 4 innings).

NOTES: Seiichi Uchikawa went 0-for-3 (.378) and Norichika Aoki went 1-for-4 (.354).

The Yakult Swallows beat the Yokohama Bay Stars, 4-1.

Yoshinori Sato has been fairly inconsistent, but he did a nice job last night against the Yokohama Bay Stars. He tossed 8 innings while giving up only 1 run on 2 hits. Yoshinori started the game by retiring the frst 17 batters and then gave up a single to break-up the no hitter (6.2 innings of perfect ball). The one run he gave up came in the top of the 8th and Yuuki Yoshimura drilled a 1-0 fastball down the middle for his 33rd home run of the season.

I was messing around with the stats you posted, and used them to come up with a Pythagorean winning percentage for the Pacific League. Using 1.83 as the exponent, I came up with the following standings:

Seibu Lions: 81-63
Orix Buffaloes: 75-69
Rakuten Eagles: 74-70
Chiba Lotte Marines: 73-71
Nippon Ham Fighters 71-73
Softbank Hawks: 63-81

Wow, the Eagles in third? I guess the one problem with the Pythagorean winning percentage is not being able to figure in ties. But otherwise, to be honest, I wouldn't have been surprised if the teams finished the season in that order.

The Lions really should have won more than the 76 games they finished with (a really bad run late in the season really killed things for that team). The Eagles could have finished with a much better record, but inconsistency was a major problem (something that you can't always pick up on just when just looking at the end of the season stats). And the Fighters had a decent staff, but basically no offense to support it.

The Pythagorean winning percentage was basically right on with the Buffaloes.

The one team that's kind of tough to gauge would be the Hawks. I thought they'd do a little better, but they just sort of dropped off the face of the earth at the tail end of the season. Injuries played a part of that, but I was still surprised at how poorly their season ended.

Thanks for crunching the numbers though. Interesting stuff.

I know they should be taken with a grain of salt, but they can be fun to look at.

Here is the Central League through the stats you posted yesterday:

Yomiuri Giants: 81-59 (.578 expected winning percentage)
Hanshin Tigers: 77-63 (.549)
Yakult Swallows: 71-69 (.511)
Chunichi Dragons: 69-74 (.485)
Hiroshima Carp: 65-79 (.454)
Yokohama Bay Stars: 53-86 (.384)

When I get a chance I might mess around a bit more with the stats. I really appreciate you posting them.

No problem. I've found some more interesting stats that I'll be posting later. The thing that really sucks about all of this is that none of these Japanese sites bother to archive the old data and simply replace all of it with new data.

I'm beginning to think that the NPB has a stranglehold on the rights.

BTW: if might be worthwhile if you posted the numbers you crunched in a blog post. Otherwise your work might get lost in the shuffle.

Sounds like a good idea. I'll wait until after the Central League is done, and then I'll post the final Pythagorean standings.

Cool. I'll be looking out for it.
