Central League
The Yakult Swallows beat the Hiroshima Carp, 13-3.
The Swallows banged out 15 hits (including 2 doubles, 1 triple, and 2 home runs) to score 13 runs against the Carp. They sent 14 batters to the plate in 4th when they scored 9 runs on 6 hits, 5 walks and 1 hbp. If not for a GIDP by Hiroyasu Tanaka to end the inning, the Swallows may have scored even more runs in 4th.
The Carp scored 3 runs on 8 hits, but sqandered at least two chances to score more. In the top of the 2nd Kenta Kurihara started the inning with a double. A fly out, followed by two consecutive singles loaded the bases with 1 out for Yoshikazu Kura. He managed to drive in one of the three runners on base with a grounder to short, but the two others remained stranded as Yuki Saito struck out.
The other missed opportunity came in the 5th when the Carp managed to load the bases with 1 out but managed to score only one run on a sac fly. Scott Seabol recorded the final out of the inning with a fly ball to left.
NOTES: Norichika Aoki went 4-for-5 and raised his batting average to .359.
The Chunichi Dragons beat the Yokohama Bay Stars, 3-1.
Kenshin Kawakami picked up his 9th win of the season by tossing 6 innings of 4-hit, shut-out ball. Byung-Kyu Lee (2-run HR) and Kazuhiro Wada (solo HR) drove in all three runs in the top of the 5th to give the Dragons all the runs they would need.
The lone run the Bay Stars scored was in the 9th against Dragons closer, Hitoki Iwase. The inning could have gotten out of hand, but a key double play after two straight singles kept things from getting out of hand.
NOTES: The Bay Stars 5-16-1 in the month of September. The last time they won was on September 13th against the Chunichi Dragons. The Bays Stars are 0-12-1 since then. ... Seiichi Uchikawa went 1-for-4, dropping his average to .373.
The Giants and the Tigers have the night off.
Pacific League
The Nippon Ham Fighters beat the Rakuten Eagles, 17-0.
After scoring 15 runs in last night's game against the Softbank Hawks, the Eagles were ripped apart by the Fighters for 17 runs and 28 hits. All four pitchers that appeared for the Eagles allowed at least a run: Masahiro Tanaka 7 ER, Yasuhiro Ichiba 6 ER, Akira Matsumoto 3 ER, and Marcus Gwyn 1 ER.
Every starter in the line-up recored a hit for the Fighters, with Kensuke Tanaka, Hichori Morimoto, and Shinji Takahashi leading the pack with 4 hits a piece while Termel Sledge, Eiichi Koyano, and Tomochika Tsuboi each contributed 3 hits. Both Sledge (3-run HR) and Makoto Kaneko (2-run HR) had 4 rbi nights.
The Eagles did have a couple of spots in the game where they could have scored some runs. They loaded the bases with 1 out in the bottom of the 5th, but failed to push a run across home. They also loaded the bases in the bottom of the 8th with 1 out, but again failed to score any runs.
NOTES: The Eagles still have 6 games remaining on their schedule, which means it's still possible for Tanaka to reach 10 victories (he only tossed 63 pitches over his 2.1 innings of work). ... This was the 6th time the Eagles gave up double-digit runs in s loss.
The Orix Buffaloes beat the Softbank Hawks, 4-1.
30,175 fans gathered Kyocera Dome to watch Kazuhiro Kiyohara's Retirement Game. The Buffaloes will be involved in the Climax Series but Kiyohara wanted to retire before the series because he felt the younger players would benefit from playing more than he would.
Kiyohara ends his storied career by going 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and 2 strikeouts. He finishes the season batting .182 over 22 games (4-for-22) and struck out 11 times.
As for the game itself, both pitchers tossed complete games. Toshiya Sugiuchi went 8 innings for his complete game while giving up 4 runs on 8 hits (1 homer) and struck out 13. Kazuki Kondo picked up his 10th victory of the season and tossed 9 innings for his complete while giving up an earned run on 5 hits, 4 walks, and a HBP. He also struck out 4.
Tuffy Rhodes hit his 40th home run of the season in the fourth with a runner on.
NOTES: Special guests included Seatle Mariner Ichiro Suzuki and the singer behind "Tombo," Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi. The song "Tombo" has become something of a theme song for Kiyohara over the years. Because of this, Nagabuchi wanted to perform the song live at Kiyohara's retirement game.
The Seibu Lions beat the Chiba Lotte Marines, 9-5.

In the big 7-run second inning, the Lions went 7-for-9 with 2 homers, a walk, and double play. Takumi Kuriyama (3-for-4) and Takeya Nakamura were (1-for-4) the two players to hit home runs in the inning for the Lions: Kuriyama his a grand slam and Nakamura hit a 2-run shot.
