Rangers Trade for Einar Diaz and Ryan Drese

http://texas.rangers.mlb.com/NASApp/..._tex&fext=.jsp '

Quote:
ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Rangers are in the process of acquiring a starting catcher that will all but end Ivan Rodriguez's tenure in Texas.
According to recent reports, the Rangers will send first baseman Travis Hafner and pitcher Aaron Myette to the Cleveland Indians for starting catcher Einar Diaz and right-hander Ryan Drese.

The Rangers would not confirm the deal, but assistant general manager Dan O'Brien said the Rangers will have an announcement regarding a trade at 3 p.m. CST.

The Rangers have until 11 p.m. Saturday to offer Rodriguez arbitration but are not close to working out a deal with him. If the Rangers do not offer arbitration to Rodriguez, they cannot negotiate with him until May 1.

The addition of Diaz would bring a front-line catcher to a team that has only veteran journeyman Todd Greene and young Gerald Laird on the 40-man roster.

Diaz was hampered by injury last season and hit .206 with two home runs and 16 RBIs in 320 at-bats. In 2001, he hit .277 with four home runs and 56 RBIs. That year, he led American League catchers by throwing out 35.4 percent of base runners.

Drese, 26, was 10-9 with a 6.55 ERA for the Indians last season. He allowed 176 hits and struck out 102 in 137 1/3 innings.

Hafner hit .342 with 21 home runs and 77 RBIs in 110 games with Triple-A Oklahoma this past season. He hit .242 with one home run and six RBIs in 23 games for Texas and recently returned from playing in the Winter Leagues in Puerto Rico because of an ailing right wrist.

Myette, who often struggled with his control, went 2-5 with a 10.06 ERA this past season. He walked 41 batters and struck out 48 in 48 1/3 innings.
I'm worried that they didn't get enough for Travis Hafner.

I hope Drese and Hafner work out, because otherwise it just looks like a trade of one lousy veteran for another (Diaz and Myette)...

He's on his way: Victor Martinez.

His stats from AA:

Code:
BATTERS AVG G AB R H TB 2B 3B HR RBI SH SF HP BB IB SO SB CS DP SLG OBP

Martinez, Victor .336 121 443 84 149 255 40 0 22 85 0 6 8 58 6 62 3 3 10 .576 .417
That .993 OPS looks pretty good for a switch-hitting catcher.

Myette isn't exactly a veteran. He's like the rookie that does something half-decent now and then, but usually does stuff like getting ejected after two pitches.

Well, by "veteran" I meant that he's got a fair amount of service time now, and is hardly a prospect anymore at this point...

baseball-reference isn't working for me, but offhand I think his career ERA is somewhere around 8.00...

I think this will be a good trade. Diaz is a good defensive catcher but he doesn't hit very well, and the Tribe have Josh Bard and Martinez at catcher coming up.

Drese may be good, but he was pretty bad last year and got in trouble with the Tribe brass for arguing with his pitching coach. They promptly sent him to the minors.

I don't know much yet about the 2 guys we got in return, but the 1st base prospect looks promising.

You'd like to get more than 4 HRs from your starting catcher, which is about all Diaz is worth...

In order to lead the league, you must have 1 IP for each team game.

Myette sucks, Hafner is a nice pickup.

Ryan Drese is a nice pickup for the Rangers. Diaz always killed the Soxs so i'm glad he's out of the central.

This makes me feel a little better about Thome leaving.

Bard and Martinez I think will both be in the lineup next season.

Well, if Burks is traded. Both can hit very well, but Bard is an incredible fielder. Martinz is an average fielder but can hit better than Bard.

I say put Martinez at DH or make him change positions.

Does that mean that Jason Varitek didn't lead the league in hitting when he went 1-for-1 in '97?

I knew that, husker; I was just kidding . I was trying to find something nice to say about Aaron Myette, which is pretty hard to do...

I can't wait to see Bard in the majors. I got to watch most of his college career at Tech.

Diaz hit only .206?

He was a good contact hitter before this year, hitting around .280 each year.

Hafner is a great prospect. Who wins this trade depends on him. I guess the Rangers like Jason Hart more.

Diaz is a good catcher who will do well enough as Pudge's replacement. Drese is definately an upgrade over Myette. Haffner showed that he was a pretty good hitter last year, and Myette just plain sucks. Also, Nut, Haffner wasn't a firstbaseman for us, and we expect Mark Texiera to be our future firstbaseman. He's better than all of the above mentioned.

Drese isnt a great upgrade ...

Hes a guy thats gonna need a lotta run support soemtimes, and none others.

Hes totally unpredictable. One game its 7 runs given up, then next its 1

I just know Hafner came a stumble away from hitting for the cycle against the tribe last year..
